President John Dramani Mahama has received five reports prepared by a high-level committee of experts to guide Ghana’s preparations for the country’s 2027 African Union (AU) chairmanship.
The reports were formally presented to the President at the Presidency on Friday, August 21, 2026, marking the completion of the committee’s preparatory assignment ahead of Ghana’s expected assumption of the rotating continental leadership in January 2027.
The High-Level Committee of Experts was established by President Mahama to develop a strategic framework for Ghana’s leadership of the AU.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who chaired the committee, presented the reports to the President and briefed him on key aspects of the work.
The committee’s output includes a strategy document, priority pillars and a work programme intended to provide direction for Mahama’s tenure as AU Chair.
Ablakwa said the committee had completed its mandate and expressed confidence that the preparatory work would help position Mahama’s tenure to deliver results.
He described the President’s expected tenure as potentially “transformative and impactful”, linking that expectation to the preparatory work and Mahama’s broader vision for Africa.
Key details of Ghana’s AU preparations
The five reports are expected to give Ghana a clearer framework for the priorities it will pursue once Mahama assumes the AU chairmanship.

In February 2026, Mahama was elected First Vice Chairperson of the African Union at the AU Assembly’s 39th Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa.
Burundi assumed the AU chairmanship for 2026, while Ghana took the First Vice Chair position representing West Africa.
The sequence places Ghana in a position of increasing involvement in the AU’s leadership arrangements before the chairmanship rotates to West Africa in 2027.
For Ghana, the significance of the five reports lies not simply in their submission but in what they are intended to achieve.
