An Accra Circuit Court has remanded an unemployed man into police custody after he was accused of unlawfully spending GH¢114,000 belonging to his former girlfriend on sports betting.
According to the prosecution, the accused allegedly transferred the money from the complainant’s account without her knowledge or consent before using the funds to place sports bets.
The accused has denied the allegations, and the case remains before the court for further proceedings.
Prosecutors told the court that the complainant and the accused were previously in a romantic relationship.
The prosecution alleges that the accused gained access to the complainant’s financial account and transferred GH¢114,000 without authorization.
Investigators further claim that a substantial portion of the money was used to fund sports betting activities.
The prosecution maintains that the alleged transactions were carried out without the complainant’s approval.
Court Orders Suspect Remanded
Following his appearance before the court, the accused was remanded into police custody pending further investigations and subsequent hearings.
The court is expected to revisit the matter on the adjourned date, where prosecutors may present additional evidence as the case progresses.
No verdict has been delivered, and the allegations have not been tested in court. Law enforcement authorities say investigations into the alleged offence are ongoing.
Officials are expected to examine financial records and other evidence as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged transactions.
The prosecution is also expected to rely on documentary and electronic evidence during the trial.
Under Ghana’s legal system, every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. The charges against the accused remain allegations, and the court will determine the facts after hearing evidence from both the prosecution and the defence.
Growing Focus on Digital Financial Crime
The case has drawn public attention because it involves allegations of unauthorized financial transactions and the use of digital platforms for sports betting.
Legal analysts say the matter also highlights the importance of protecting personal banking information and maintaining strong digital security measures.
The proceedings are expected to continue when the case returns to court.
