The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) Flood Taskforce has started a large-scale exercise to dredge drains and demolish structures blocking waterways across parts of Accra.
Officials say the operation aims to improve water flow and reduce flooding during the rainy season.
The exercise targets communities identified as flood-prone after recent heavy rains. The taskforce has deployed teams to remove silt, waste and other materials from major drains.
Engineers are also dredging waterways to increase their capacity before more rainfall arrives. Officials say blocked drains often cause floodwaters to build up during storms.
The exercise also includes the demolition of structures found to be obstructing drainage channels and waterways.
Authorities say these structures restrict the natural flow of water and increase the risk of flooding. The taskforce said all affected actions will follow the relevant legal and administrative procedures.
Officials have urged residents to support the exercise by keeping drains free from waste.
They also warned against dumping refuse into gutters and waterways. According to the taskforce, poor waste disposal remains one of the main causes of flooding in the capital.
