The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders and other occupants at parts of Agbogbloshie one month to vacate the area ahead of plans to construct a 24-Hour Economy Market.
The notice was formally served on August 4, 2026, and will expire on August 28. The AMA says it will begin removing structures from the affected areas after the deadline.
The affected locations include the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, Nzema Market and portions of the Yam Market. The Assembly says traders and commercial operators affected by the redevelopment will move to a parcel of land it has prepared for them.
AMA outlines relocation plans
According to the AMA, the decision followed consultations with traditional authorities, market leaders, traders and other community representatives.
The consultations focused on the proposed redevelopment and the planned clearance exercise.
The Assembly has also started preparations for the project. It marked structures within the areas earmarked for redevelopment on August 4.
A public education and sensitization campaign followed on August 5. The AMA says the campaign will explain the redevelopment plans and provide information about the clearance and relocation process.
Project linked to 24-Hour Economy program
The AMA says the redevelopment forms part of efforts to support the government’s 24-Hour Economy program.
The proposed facility is expected to provide a dedicated market space as part of the wider program.
The Assembly has urged affected traders and other occupants to take note of the August 28 deadline and prepare for relocation to the designated site.
What happens after August 28?
The AMA says the one-month notice will give affected occupants time to make arrangements before the clearance exercise begins.
The Assembly has not indicated that the redevelopment will end trading activities for those affected. Instead, it says the affected traders and commercial operators will relocate to the prepared site.
The immediate focus is therefore on completing the relocation process and clearing the areas required for the proposed market.
The development marks another step in the AMA’s plans to redevelop parts of Agbogbloshie while supporting the government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda.
