Former Ghanaian professional boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The arrest took place on Monday, August 24, 2026, after a video circulating on social media allegedly showed Ayitey Powers making threatening remarks against the sports administrator. Police say he is currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
The Accra Regional Police Command said its investigation is focused on establishing the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat. It added that any further action will be determined by the findings of the investigation and in accordance with the law.
The development follows an earlier call by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) for police action against Ayitey Powers over the alleged remarks.
On August 20, the committee condemned what it described as threats against Ampofo Ankrah and said it had asked the police to investigate the matter.
The dispute appears to have links to disagreements within Ghana’s boxing community.
Reports indicate that Ayitey Powers had raised concerns about the handling of a boxing promotion and his dealings with the NSA. However, the precise circumstances behind the alleged threat remain subject to police investigation.
Importantly, Ayitey Powers has not been convicted of any offence. The allegations against him remain under investigation, and the police have not announced any formal charge in connection with the case.
The Accra Regional Police Command has also urged the public to avoid circulating unverified information while the investigation continues.
The case has drawn attention because it involves two prominent figures in Ghana’s sports sector and comes amid wider discussions about the management and administration of boxing in the country.
For now, the immediate next step is the police investigation. Its findings will determine whether further legal action is taken against Ayitey Powers.
