The Sustainable Finance Roadmap was introduced by Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), reiterating the central bank’s dedication to developing a robust, inclusive, and future-oriented financial system.

Launched on Tuesday, June 30, the roadmap presents a structured approach aimed at enhancing climate-related risk management, facilitating sustainable finance to aid the nation’s enduring economic transformation, and integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles within Ghana’s financial sector.

Dr. Asiama said at the launch that sustainable finance goes beyond controlling financial and environmental risks, putting Ghana in a position to draw in new investment possibilities.

“Sustainable finance goes beyond merely managing risks. “It’s also about strategically positioning Ghana to tap into new sources of global capital, financing essential infrastructure, supporting the energy transition, enhancing our financial markets, and fostering sustainable long-term growth,” he stated,” he said.

The Bank of Ghana claims that the roadmap is intended to help financial institutions integrate sustainability concerns into their operations while strengthening the industry’s resistance to new risks, including those connected to climate change.

Additionally, the effort aims to expand access to sustainable finance for investments in renewable energy, infrastructure, and other areas vital to Ghana’s economic growth.

The central bank said that in order to execute the roadmap and advance sustainable finance across the nation, it would collaborate closely with other financial sector authorities, industry stakeholders, and development partners.

The governor said, “The Bank remains committed to fostering a financial ecosystem that supports sustainable growth, working with other regulators, industry stakeholders, and development partners.”

The Bank of Ghana launched the Sustainable Finance Roadmap as part of larger initiatives to foster equitable economic development and climate resilience while bringing the nation’s financial sector into compliance with international sustainability standards.
