As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for the general elections in 2028, its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the newly elected executives of the Ashanti Regional to make unity a top priority and to unite all stakeholders.
Bawumia made the announcement while meeting behind closed doors with the newly elected leaders of the Ashanti Regional Assembly in his Accra office. Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, better known as COKA, the freshly elected regional chairman, headed the delegation.
The meeting comes after the NPP’s regional elections and forms part of Bawumia’s engagements with newly elected regional executives across the country.
Bawumia cautioned the Ashanti executives against letting the party’s recent internal disputes cause permanent schisms. He urged the newly elected officials to reach out to members who ran for regional office but were not successful.
He said the task ahead would require the participation of the wider party membership, stressing that the 2028 elections would demand a united effort.
For Bawumia, the recent internal elections should be viewed as part of a broader reorganisation rather than an endpoint. In his remarks, he laid the framework for the next national election by highlighting the party’s reform at several levels, including polling stations, electoral areas, constituencies, and regions.
“Winning the 2028 election is our shared objective. This is only a preliminary step on the road to victory in 2028. We need to get together, we need to plan, and we need to win in 2028,” Bawumia said.
He also pledged to work with the new regional leadership and other members of the party as the NPP seeks to return to government.
The Ashanti Region remains an important part of the NPP’s electoral strategy, making the effectiveness of its regional organisation particularly significant as preparations for 2028 begin.
Under COKA’s leadership, the newly elected Ashanti executives have pledged to fortify the party’s regional structures and strive for electoral success in the next presidential and parliamentary elections.
Their engagement with Bawumia is part of a wider series of meetings involving the NPP flagbearer and newly elected regional executives. Accounts of similar meetings with executives from the Greater Accra, Central, Western, and Savanna areas have surfaced.
The emphasis on reconciliation and inclusion comes as the NPP begins rebuilding its organisation ahead of the next general election. For the new Ashanti leadership, the immediate challenge will be to translate the call for unity into cooperation across the party’s various levels and among members who competed for internal positions.
Bawumia’s message to the Ashanti executives was therefore centred on three priorities: bringing the party together, strengthening its organisational structures and preparing collectively for the 2028 elections.
The new regional leadership has now pledged to work towards those objectives as the NPP looks ahead to the next electoral contest.
