Ajax Amsterdam have unveiled Alfred Schreuder as their new manager. The Dutch champions confirmed his appointment after club manager Erik Ten Hag agreed to move to Manchester United when the season ends. Schreuder, who has worked as an assistant manager for Ajax under Ten Hag, was the preferred candidate for the vacant position. Ajax confirmed in a statement the agreement for Schreuder to become their next manager in May “Ajax, Club Brugge and Alfred Schreuder have reached an agreement about a transfer to Ajax," The 49-year-old also confirmed he has accepted Ajax offer to become their next manager “Becoming head coach at Ajax is an honour and a great opportunity for me, which I’ll grab with both hands," “It’s great to be back, because I had a great time at Ajax for the year-and-half I worked at the club," Edwin Van Der Sar who is the club CEO spoke on why Schreuder was appointed by the club “We know Alfred as a tactically strong coach with a good and versatile practice regime," Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar said. “We are very confident that he will be able to continue the path we took with Ajax a few years ago, both in the Eredivisie and in the UEFA Champions League," Schreuder agreed to a two-year contract with Ajax to leave his position as the manager of Club Brugge. Managerial Career Alfred Schreuder started his managerial career soon after his retirement as an assistant of Vitesse. In the summer 2009, he signed for FC Twente to become the assistant manager to Steve McClaren. After McClaren resigned his position on 26th February, 2013, Schreuder was appointed as the interim manager for the club. The club however, officially appointed Michel Jansen as the Head coach for the club in March 2013, because Schreuder was not yet appropriately licensed to be a Head coach. He remained the assistant as he continued to study to obtain his UEFA pro license in 2014. He was subsequently appointed the Head coach for FC Twente with Michel Jansen becoming his assistant. On 30th August, 2015, Schreuder was sacked after winning only one point in his first four matches of the 2015-2016 season. He was then appointed as the assistant manager for Huub Stevens at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. After Stevens' resignation from the club in February 2016, he remained at the club as the assistant to Julian Nagelsmann. In January 2018, Ajax announced that they have reached an agreement with TSG Hoffenheim to sign Schreuder as an assistant to their new head coach Erik Ten Hag. Schreuder returned to TSG Hoffenheim to succeed Julian Nagelsmann as the Head coach from July 2019, after signing a contract until 2022. He was however sacked by the club on 9th June 2020, since his form was not to the standard of the board. In August 2020, Schreuder joined Ronald Koeman at FC Barcelona as an assistant coach. They both signed a two-year contract with Barcelona. Schreuder was appointed as the Head coach of Club Brugge on 3rd January 2022, replacing Philippe Clement who left to manage AS Monaco. After winning the Belgian league with Club Brugge, Schreuder was appointed by Ajax to replace Erik Ten Hag who has joined Manchester United.
