The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected allegations that it is interfering in the internal affairs of Guinea-Bissau, insisting that its engagement with the country is guided by regional agreements and the bloc’s commitment to peace, democracy and constitutional governance.
The regional body issued the clarification following reports and public commentary questioning its role in Guinea-Bissau’s political affairs. ECOWAS said its actions have been consistent with its mandate to support stability and dialogue among member states.
ECOWAS Defends Its Role
In its response, ECOWAS stressed that it respects the sovereignty and independence of all member countries, including Guinea-Bissau.
The organisation said its interventions are carried out only within the framework of protocols and agreements adopted by member states to promote democratic governance, conflict prevention and regional security.
According to ECOWAS, its objective has always been to encourage peaceful dialogue and support efforts aimed at preserving constitutional order rather than influencing the domestic political process of any country.
The bloc noted that maintaining peace and political stability across West Africa remains one of its core responsibilities.
It explained that political instability in one member state can have wider implications for neighbouring countries, making regional cooperation essential in addressing governance and security challenges.
ECOWAS added that it will continue working with national authorities and other stakeholders to encourage dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes whenever necessary.
Calls for Constructive Engagement
The regional organisation urged all political actors in Guinea-Bissau to prioritise dialogue, respect democratic institutions and resolve differences through constitutional and legal means.
It also encouraged stakeholders to avoid actions or statements that could heighten political tensions or undermine national stability.
According to ECOWAS, lasting peace can only be achieved through cooperation, mutual respect and adherence to democratic principles.
Continued Support for Guinea-Bissau
ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Guinea-Bissau as the country continues efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions and maintain political stability.
The organisation said it remains ready to engage with the government, political leaders and other national stakeholders whenever its support is requested or considered necessary under its established mandate.
Officials added that the bloc’s long-standing relationship with Guinea-Bissau is built on partnership and shared regional goals rather than interference.
