The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reappointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, bringing the Portuguese tactician back to the role only weeks after his previous mandate ended.
The GFA confirmed the decision on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following discussions involving the association, Queiroz and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
Carlos Queiroz will begin a new coaching mandate with the Black Stars during the next international window as Ghana moves into the next phase of its national-team programme.
The decision marks a reversal from the end of Queiroz’s initial short-term appointment, which was tied to Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz was first appointed in April 2026 after Otto Addo left the position. He had only a few months to prepare the team before the World Cup, where Ghana reached the knockout stage.
The Black Stars finished third in Group L after beating Panama, drawing with England and losing to Croatia. Ghana then exited the tournament after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the first knockout round.
Following the tournament, Queiroz’s initial mandate came to an end. He subsequently stepped down, but the GFA has now reached a fresh agreement with him to continue leading the national side.
The football association said Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical knowledge and familiarity with the Black Stars were key considerations behind the decision.
The 73-year-old coach has managed several national teams during a long international career, including Portugal, Iran, Colombia and Egypt. His previous World Cup experience was also one of the factors highlighted when he was originally appointed by the GFA.
The new arrangement gives Queiroz an opportunity to work with the Black Stars beyond the compressed World Cup preparation period that characterised his first spell.
His return comes as Ghana turns its attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign. Ghana is in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia. CAF has scheduled the first two rounds of qualifiers within the September 21 to October 6 international window.
The GFA has not yet disclosed the duration of Queiroz’s new mandate or the full terms of his agreement. It said further information about his responsibilities and the Black Stars’ upcoming programme would be communicated later.
Queiroz’s reappointment also means the Black Stars will enter their next assignment under a coach who has already worked with the current group of players and experienced the pressure of leading Ghana at a major tournament.
The GFA and Queiroz will now focus on the next phase of the national team’s programme, with the association expected to provide more details on the coach’s mandate and upcoming fixtures in due course.
