The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has opened its 2026 Regional Commanders’ Conference in Accra. The event brings together senior officers to improve leadership, strengthen cooperation, and enhance border security across Ghana.
This year’s conference is themed “Strengthening Command Synergy for Sustainable Growth.” The five-day meeting focuses on operational excellence, institutional growth, and stronger coordination among regional commands.
Comptroller-General of Immigration Samuel Basintale Amadu urged commanders to work more closely together. He said stronger teamwork is essential for addressing modern border security challenges.
According to him, effective communication and information sharing will improve operations across the country. He added that stronger command synergy will help the Ghana Immigration Service respond quickly to emerging security threats.
Furthermore, he encouraged officers to maintain professionalism while protecting Ghana’s borders and delivering quality immigration services.
Government Reaffirms Support for the Ghana Immigration Service
Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the Ghana Immigration Service.
He announced plans to procure about 20 armoured vehicles for officers working in difficult operational areas. The vehicles are expected to improve mobility and enhance border patrol operations.
In addition, the minister said construction of eight regional immigration offices is progressing. These projects are expected to improve working conditions and service delivery nationwide.
He also disclosed that 45 prefabricated accommodation units for officers stationed in Ghana’s five northern regions are close to completion.
Meanwhile, work on the Service’s new national headquarters is expected to accelerate after contractual issues are resolved. The conference also highlighted several reforms approved by the Ghana Immigration Service Council.
Speaking on behalf of Council Chairman Rev. Stephen Y. Wengam, officials announced the creation of an Agricultural Department. They also confirmed that the Border Management Department has been elevated to a full directorate.
Additionally, the Council approved a staff endowment fund, a mutual health insurance scheme, and new transfer guidelines designed to improve transparency and staff welfare.
Officials also highlighted the rollout of the Ghana Immigration Service’s electronic visa (e-Visa) system. The initiative is expected to modernize immigration services and improve travel processing.
Conference Focuses on Professional Development
During the conference, commanders will participate in presentations on servant leadership, strategic management, financial administration, disciplinary procedures, and command and control.
The programme also includes sessions on 360-degree leadership and institutional management. These discussions are expected to produce recommendations that will strengthen operational performance across the Service.
Strengthening Ghana’s Border Security
The annual commanders’ conference remains an important platform for reviewing the Ghana Immigration Service’s operations and future priorities.
By promoting stronger leadership, better coordination, and continuous institutional reform, the conference aims to improve border management and national security.
The discussions are also expected to support the Service’s long-term goal of building a modern, efficient, and technology-driven immigration system capable of responding to evolving security challenges.
