The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has presented GH¢12.65 million to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) following the sale of gold bars seized during an anti-smuggling operation.
The payment represents the proceeds from the sale of 17 confiscated gold bars that were transferred to GoldBod for valuation and disposal under Ghana’s gold management framework. Officials say the transaction highlights growing cooperation between state institutions in the fight against illegal gold trading.
According to GoldBod, the gold bars were intercepted during a security operation at the Paga Border Post.
Authorities allege that two foreign nationals attempted to smuggle the gold out of Ghana before security officers seized it. The matter was handled through the appropriate legal and administrative processes before the gold was transferred to GoldBod.
GoldBod said it valued the seized gold and completed its sale in line with its legal mandate. The agency then presented the sale proceeds, amounting to GH¢12.65 million, to NACOC.
Officials described the handover as an example of effective collaboration between government institutions.
GoldBod said its role includes purchasing, managing and marketing gold obtained through authorised channels. The agency also works with security institutions to prevent illegal gold exports and strengthen oversight of Ghana’s gold trade. Officials say these efforts support transparency and help protect national revenue.
The government has increased efforts to combat gold smuggling and illegal mineral trading. Security agencies have stepped up border surveillance and intelligence operations in response to the growing challenge.
Officials believe stronger coordination between institutions will help reduce illicit trade and improve compliance within the gold sector.
Gold remains one of Ghana’s most valuable export commodities.
Authorities say protecting the country’s mineral resources is essential for economic growth and foreign exchange earnings.
Government agencies have pledged to continue working together to curb illegal exports while promoting responsible and transparent gold trading.
