Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has noted that as of 22nd July, 2026 government has committed an amount of $1.7 billion into a dedicated Bank of Ghana account solely meant for the Accra-Kumais Expressway project.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament, the Finance Minister noted that the project solely remains the flagship programme under the BigPush Project.
The Minister said that the initiative included the development of a 176km six-lane bidirectional expressway connecting Ghana’s two major economic hubs, aimed at alleviating congestion, reducing transportation expenses, implementing electronic tolling, providing rest areas, and incorporating contemporary interchanges.
“It involves the construction of a 176km six lane bidirectional expressway linking Ghana’s two largest commercial cities and it is meant to ease congestion, lower transport cost, introduce electronic tolling, facilitate restops and feature modern interchanges”, Ato Forson said while presenting the Mid-YearBudget in Parliament.
He stated that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has successfully cleared 122km, which accounts for 70 percent of the total, within a span of 12 weeks, emphasizing that the entire corridor is projected to be cleared by the first week of September.
He further observed that the evaluation of compensation, the feasibility studies, and the engineering processes are advancing consistently.
“Feasibility study and detailed engineer design are expected to be complete by the end of August”, he said.
Ato Forson disclosed that the procurement for the main work is expected in September, and the funds budgeted for the project have been reinvested, to be utilized after the main contract is awarded.
