Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed the widespread power outage recorded across the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.
The incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants.
GRIDCo said the shutdown was a protective response intended to safeguard the stability of Ghana’s National Interconnected Transmission System.
According to GRIDCo, the fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line caused parts of the national power system to trip automatically.
This resulted in electricity supply being interrupted in several parts of Ghana, including communities in Accra and parts of the Eastern, Northern, Central and Ashanti regions.
In Greater Accra, areas reported as being affected included Adabraka, Weija, Tesano, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Legon, Madina, Adenta and Oyarifa. Aburi in the Eastern Region and Tamale in the Northern Region were also among areas affected, according to reports citing GRIDCo.
The company said its engineers immediately isolated the affected transmission line and began a coordinated restoration process with other power-sector agencies.
The outage was not described by GRIDCo as a deliberate load-management exercise.
Instead, the company said the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal plants was part of the protection mechanisms built into the national power system.
These protection systems are designed to prevent a fault from causing wider damage to the interconnected transmission network.
In this case, however, the protective shutdown itself resulted in a significant loss of electricity supply to customers across affected areas.
GRIDCo said restoration had already begun shortly after the incident.
Some affected communities had their electricity supply restored, while technical teams continued working to reconnect remaining customers.
The company said all relevant technical teams had been mobilised and were working to restore the system as quickly and safely as possible.
GRIDCo also apologised to affected customers and appealed for patience while restoration efforts continued.
The transmission company has not, in its initial statement, given a detailed explanation of what caused the Akosombo–Volta line to develop the fault.
GRIDCo has identified the faulty transmission line as the immediate trigger of the outage, but further technical information may be required to establish the underlying cause of the fault.
GRIDCo says restoration work is continuing and that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
