The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed universities and other tertiary institutions to stop using entrance examinations as a general condition for admission unless they have legal authority or prior approval to do so.
The Commission said institutions must follow the nationally approved admission requirements and accredited procedures when selecting applicants.
According to GTEC, additional entrance examinations should not replace or override established admission standards without proper authorisation.
In its directive, GTEC reminded tertiary institutions that admissions must comply with national regulations.
The Commission said universities should base admission decisions on approved academic qualifications and other recognised criteria.
It warned that introducing unauthorised entrance tests could undermine fairness, transparency and consistency across the higher education sector.
GTEC is the statutory body responsible for regulating tertiary education in Ghana. Its mandate includes maintaining academic standards, accrediting institutions and ensuring compliance with national policies.
The Commission said institutions are expected to follow its directives to protect the integrity of the country’s higher education system.
GTEC clarified that entrance examinations may still be permitted in specific circumstances. Such examinations must have a clear legal basis or receive prior approval from the Commission.
The directive does not prevent institutions from applying approved professional or statutory admission requirements where they are authorized by law.
The Commission said a uniform admissions process promotes equal opportunities for qualified applicants. It added that transparent procedures help maintain public confidence in tertiary education.
GTEC encouraged institutions to review their admission practices to ensure full compliance with national regulations.
The Commission expects universities and other tertiary institutions to implement the directive without delay. It said compliance will strengthen quality assurance and support fairness in Ghana’s higher education system.
