President John Dramani Mahama has called on the African Union (AU) to strengthen efforts to address recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
According to the President, violence targeting African migrants threatens the continent’s unity and weakens the goals of regional integration. He urged AU member states to work together to protect the rights and safety of people living outside their home countries.
Mahama said African governments should respond collectively to xenophobic violence.
He stressed that attacks against foreign nationals undermine the values of cooperation and solidarity that underpin the African Union. The President also called for stronger collaboration to prevent future incidents.
Mahama warned that xenophobic attacks could affect Africa’s long-term development agenda. He said fear and insecurity make it harder for people and businesses to move freely across borders.
The President noted that initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) depend on trust, stability and cooperation among member states.
Mahama urged governments to protect African migrants regardless of their nationality.
He said every African citizen deserves dignity, security and equal treatment while living or working in another African country.
The President also encouraged authorities to ensure that anyone responsible for unlawful attacks is held accountable through the legal system.
South Africa has experienced several outbreaks of xenophobic violence over the years.
Many incidents have affected migrants from other African countries, damaging businesses and forcing some residents to flee affected communities.
Governments and regional organizations have repeatedly condemned the attacks and appealed for calm.
The African Union has consistently promoted peaceful coexistence, human rights and regional cooperation among its member states.
Mahama’s appeal adds to calls for stronger continental action against xenophobia.
He said lasting solutions require cooperation, effective law enforcement and sustained public education to discourage violence and discrimination.
