President John Dramani Mahama says the government is in the final stages of preparing compensation for people affected by the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage.
According to the President, the compensation package forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to support thousands of residents whose homes, farms and businesses were affected by the controlled release of water in 2023.
He said the government remains committed to providing relief and helping affected communities rebuild their lives.
President Mahama said work on the compensation programme is progressing. He explained that government agencies are completing the necessary processes before payments begin.
The President did not announce a specific date for the compensation exercise. Officials are expected to provide further details once the process is complete.
The controlled spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams caused widespread flooding across parts of the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra regions. Many communities experienced damage to homes, schools, farms and public infrastructure.
Thousands of people were displaced and required emergency assistance. Government agencies, humanitarian organisations and volunteers responded with food, shelter and other relief items.
The government has continued to implement recovery measures since the flooding. These include resettlement support, infrastructure repairs and assistance for affected households.
The 2026 Budget Statement also provides for continued support for communities impacted by the dam spillage. Officials say the compensation programme forms part of the broader recovery strategy.
Beyond compensation, the government says it wants to strengthen disaster preparedness.
Officials have indicated that improving flood management, protecting vulnerable communities and upgrading infrastructure remain key priorities.
