President John Dramani Mahama has approved six new appointments and reassignments within Ghana’s National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), in a move aimed at reorganising key operational and administrative responsibilities within the country’s security structure.
The changes, announced on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, take immediate effect.
Among the major changes is the appointment of retired Major General William Ayamdo as Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Operations.
William Ayamdo takes charge of Operations
Major General (Rtd.) William Ayamdo, a former Chief of Army Staff, has been assigned responsibility for Operations under the National Security Council Secretariat.
Ayamdo served as Chief of Army Staff from February 2017 until his retirement in February 2020. His new appointment places his military experience at the operational level of Ghana’s national security structure.
His appointment is one of six changes announced as part of the latest reorganisation.
Yaw Donkor reassigned to Intelligence and Research
Former National Security Coordinator Yaw Donkor has also been moved to a new role.
He has been appointed Director of Intelligence and Research at the Office of the National Security Advisor.
Donkor previously served as National Security Coordinator during President Mahama’s first administration between 2014 and 2017.
The new position places him within the intelligence and research side of the national security structure.
Four other changes announced
The reorganisation also affects logistics, human security, special investigations and police deployment.
The other appointments and reassignment are:
– Adamu Saaka — Director of Logistics and Transport
– Faustina Effah-Boadi — Officer in Charge of the Human Security Department
– DCOP (Rtd.) Peter Ndekugri — Officer in Charge of the Special Investigations Unit
– ACP Alhassan Osman — reassigned to the Ghana Police Service for further deployment.
Together with the appointments of Ayamdo and Donkor, the changes affect six positions within or connected to the national security structure.
Changes come amid wider security reforms
The latest appointments come as the government continues to reorganise Ghana’s national security architecture.
The restructuring follows recent legislative changes affecting the country’s security and intelligence framework. Reports on the new arrangements indicate that the changes include the abolition of the Office of the Minister of National Security.
The current structure includes the Office of the National Security Advisor and the National Security Coordinator, with the latest appointments adding new personnel to key operational, intelligence and specialised functions.
Appointments take immediate effect
The Presidency said all six appointments and reassignments take effect immediately.
The changes place experienced security personnel in roles covering operations, intelligence and research, logistics, human security and special investigations, while ACP Alhassan Osman has been returned to the Ghana Police Service for further deployment.
