Mahama supports Sammy Gyamfi’s ‘insensitive’ cartoon tweet

Flag Bearer of the Opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has mounted a spirited defense for Sammy Gyamfi after the latter’s cartoon picture was slammed by well meaning Ghanaians for insulting the memory of George Floyd in an attempt to discredit the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Sammy Gyamfi some few days ago posted a picture on his Twitter handle which bears the image of Jean Mensa and President Akufo-Addo kneeling on the neck of a black male lying on his face.

According to the communication officer of the NDC, the picture depicts the same way the EC want to tie the hands of other opposition parties in the country and rig the elections for the ruling New Patriotic Party scheduled for December 7, 2020.

Sammy Gyamfi’s tweet did not go down well with a section of the public who lambasted him.

However, the NDC firebrand defended his tweet saying “This cartoon doesn’t mock the painful xenophobic murder of George Floyd or seek to exploit same for political capital in any way. Floyd was choked to death while screaming for breathe.  In GH today, the Jean Mensah-led EC is seeking to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters through a xenophobic voter register. The potential victims of this grave injustice, are screaming for breathe. They are screaming for their inalienable right to vote. Nothing wrong with sharing a cartoon which draws a parallel between the painful xenophobic murder of George Floyd, and the evil attempt by the GH EC to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters through a xenophobic voter register.‬ Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere. This is a serious matter, not a joke”.

The former President has reacted to the cartoon that has set social media on fire. According to him, Ghanaians and especially NPP members are hypocrites.

To him, some innocent people were beating mercilessly in this country for going to elect an MP for their constituency and a majority of Ghanaians saw nothing bad with that and even called for more beatings but the same people are on the neck of sammy Gyamfi for perfectly describing the posture of the EC and government with a picture.

Mr Mahama shared a cartoon depicting the beatings some supposed members of the NDC received at the hands of the security and indicated that it has similar undertones with regards to what Sammy Gyamfi said so if they did not have a problem with that, why should they have a problem with Sammy Gyamfi’s cartoon.

He posted “A tale of two cartoons:

Sensitivity – Sensitivities (plural).

Definition: the quality or condition of being sensitive: feelings liable to be offended or hurt; sensibilities.

Double standard – Double standards (plural).

Definition: a rule or principle, which is unfairly applied in different ways to different people or groups”.
