Manchester City are reportedly readying a bid in the region of €50m to sign Brighton and Hove Albion left back, Marc Cucurella. Cucurella is the primary target for City’s left back position and the Citizens will do all that they can to sign him.
Manchester City already have only Oleksander Zinchenko to depend on at the left back position due to the court issues of Benjamin Mendy. Pep feels there is a need to recruit an equally competent left back to help in their quest to retain the Premier League next season, and possibly win the Champions league.
Cucurella’s background
Marc Cucurella, 23 years of age, is a left back who plays for Brighton and Hove Albion. He joined Brighton from Getafe in the year 2020. Brighton paid €18m for his transfer from Getafe. Cucurella started his career with the Barcelona B team in 2017. He was further promoted to the senior team in 2018, but he could not command a starting spot. He was loaned to LaLiga side Eibar, in 2018. Eibar exercised the option to buy for only €2m in 2019. He then joined Eibar on a permanent basis in 2019.
Barcelona went back for Cucurella in the same year by paying €4m to Eibar as a transfer fee. He was again loaned to Getafe in 2019. Getafe acquired him on a permanent basis for a fee of €10m in 2020. Brighton and Hove Albion then signed him from Getafe for a fee of €18m in 2021.
Just after one season with Brighton, Cucurella could sign for Pep Guardiola’s side for a fee in the region of €50m.
Cucurella’s stats for Brighton
The Spanish International played a total of 35 matches for Brighton and Hove Albion last season. He started in all the 35 games. He scored one goal and provided only one assist in all his outings for the club. He appeared twice in the Premier League team of the week. In his 35 appearances for Brighton, he kept eight clean sheets for his side. Cucurella has a dribble success of 51 percent, which is one of the best in the competition.
Even though he has few numbers in goal contribution, he is very good surging forward and could still do his defensive duties without any issues. He committed zero errors leading to a goal, which is quite impressive. His inclusion will enable City to rotate their squad since they will be participating in a lot of competitions this season.
Manchester City have already announced the signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, and the striker will be leading the attack for them next season. The Citizens want to improve their squad going into next season so they can retain the Premier league title.
