The Afigya Sekyere East parliamentary aspirant, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, has been seen in a video with a bloodstained white shirt in what many have described as severe torture inflicted by police officers during his detention.
The chaos happened at a polling centre in Afigya Sekyere East constituency in the Ashanti Region, where the elections continued in defiance of reports regarding a court injunction aimed at stopping the process. The political activist was arrested on Sunday July 12.
Per reports, Okatakyie stormed the voting center where voting was in progress to submit a court injunction notice. However, according to eyewitness accounts, the staunch supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) together with some heavily built men (machomen) became violent at the polling center prompting the officers to intervene by arresting Okatakyie and his men.
In response to the arrest and the circumstances surrounding the purported court order, the Ashanti North Regional Police Command has not issued an official statement.
This comes at a time when emotions are running high in the Ashanti Region as a result of the current constituency executive elections held by the NPP, with certain contests facing legal challenges.
