The Gbewa Palace in Yendi has confirmed the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon Kingdom, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II. This news has plunged the Dagbon state into mourning.
In accordance with the long-standing traditions of Dagbon, the news of the King’s passing reverberated through the early hours of Monday. The solemn sound of gunshots, the rhythmic beating of royal drums, and the ceremonial display of the Sapashini (warriors) conveyed to the people of Dagbon and beyond that the esteemed occupant of the Skin of Gbewaa had departed to join his ancestors.
Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II fell ill for a short period and was sent to South Africa to receive medical care; however , he did not make it.
The death of Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II signifies the conclusion of a reign characterized by reconciliation, stability, and the fortification of unity within the Dagbon Kingdom.
Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, the 41st Overlord of Dagbon, ascended the Gbewaa throne in January 2019 after a historic peace process that ended a 16-year chieftaincy dispute between the Abudu and Andani royal gates.
Born Abubakari Mahama in Mion, he was the son of the late Yaa Naa Mahama II. Before becoming king, he served as Kpunkpono Naa and later Savelugu Naa.
Since his enskinment, Yaa Naa Abukari II has been recognised for promoting peace, unity and the restoration of Dagbon’s traditional institutions.
