According to multiple reports, Real Madrid are eyeing a surprise move for Tottenham Hotspur forward Heung-min Son, as a summer replacement for Kylian Mbappé.

The Los Blancos have been on the hunt for an attacking reinforcement this summer. They were very interested in bringing Kylian Mbappé to the club this summer on a free transfer but, Mbappé ended up staying at Paris Saint-Germain.

Madrid had a successful negotiations with Mbappé’s camp and they were very sure he will join them this summer. They reached a verbal agreement but the board of PSG were swift to convince him to stay at the club. His decision made Florentino Pérez and the Madrid supporters very disappointed. Some even suggested he chose money over his childhood dreams.

The Spanish club have already confirmed the signing of Antonio Rüdiger on a free transfer and Aurélien Tchouaméni from AS Monaco. Madrid paid €100m for the signing of Tchouaméni.

After reinforcing the defence and the midfield, they still want to strengthen their attack in other for them to defend the Champions League and the LaLiga titles they won last season.

Son is very much admired by Florentino Pérez and the Madrid supporters, due to his commitment and professionalism. Madrid would be very happy to bring him to the club to beef up their attack. However, Madrid would have to convince him to accept their project since he is very loyal to Tottenham and their chairman Daniel Levy. He would not want to do anything to create discord between himself and Tottenham.

Daniel Levy, is seen to be a very difficult character when it comes to negotiating transfers. He would not reduce the cost of his player just because the player prefers a move to a different club. He maintains a strong position in transfers and it might be difficult for Madrid to lure one of his best performing players out of the club.

Pérez however, has a very good relationship with Daniel Levy due to previous transfers. Madrid had previously purchased Luka Modric and Gareth Bale from Tottenham, who have all gone on to win the Champions League, so there is a possibility a deal could be done should Madrid make an offer.

Heung-min Son 29, joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Tottenham paid a transfer fee in the excess of €30m for the South Korean. Son has been very consistent with his performance and was awarded the golden boot last season in the English Premier league. He scored 22 goals and was the joint top scorer alongside Mohammed Salah of Liverpool.

His mammoth contribution helped Tottenham to place fourth in the league, qualifying them to play champions league next season ahead of London rival Arsenal and Manchester United.

With his seven years stay at Tottenham, Son has not won any trophy with the club. However, Madrid provide him with a better and bigger platform to win trophies as they have demonstrated every season. As Tottenham were competing for a top four finish last season, Madrid were winning double; the LaLiga and the Champions League. Son could cost Madrid €100m.

An alternative for Real Madrid, should Son’s deal fails is Serge Gnabry of Bayern Münich. He has refused several approaches by the club to renew his contract, and he would be interested in joining the European champions should they come calling.

The summer transfer window opened on 10 June and it will close on midnight of 31 August, 2022.
