Former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu still in prison custody despite being acquitted by the Court of Appeal, according to Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
Speaking on the matter, Kwakye Ofosu stated that Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu has not yet been released because the Attorney-General has applied for a stay of execution of the appellate court’s judgment while the State prepares to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court.
According to him, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu remains in lawful custody pending the outcome of that application.
The case follows a unanimous decision by the Court of Appeal to overturn her conviction and 10-year prison sentence. The appellate court ruled that the prosecution failed to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt and ordered that she be acquitted and discharged.
However, the Attorney-General’s Office has moved to suspend the immediate enforcement of that judgment.
The State argues that the acquittal should not take effect until the Supreme Court determines its intended appeal. Prosecutors contend that releasing Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu before the appeal is heard could make it difficult to continue the legal process if she leaves the country.
According to Kwakye Ofosu, the Chief Justice has authorized the Court of Appeal to sit during the legal vacation to hear the application for a stay of execution.
The hearing has been scheduled for 16 August 2026.
The legal dispute stems from criminal proceedings involving Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu during her tenure as MASLOC Chief Executive. She was previously convicted by the High Court on corruption-related charges before successfully appealing the judgment.
The Court of Appeal’s decision effectively nullified the earlier conviction. Nevertheless, the State’s application means the legal process is not yet complete.
Legal experts note that a stay of execution is a procedural mechanism that temporarily suspends the enforcement of a court decision while a higher court considers an appeal. It does not reverse or invalidate the appellate ruling.
The final outcome of the case will now depend on the Court of Appeal’s decision on the stay application and any subsequent proceedings before the Supreme Court.
Until then, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu’s legal status is still subject to the ongoing judicial process.
