The ‘one-week’ commemoration service for the late Chief Executive Officer of Forestry Commission, Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as ‘Sir John’ came off yesterday, (July 22) at his hometown, Sakra Wonoo near Kumawu in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

The ceremony which was organized in an atmosphere of solemnity and under strict adherence to social distancing protocols, brought together staff, family members and loved ones of Sir John who came to mourn his passing.

Some dignitries who attended the ceremony were Vice-President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bwumia and his wife Samira , the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Bernard Antwi Bosiako (Chairman Wontumi), and the General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia among others.

Also present were the selected staff of the Forestry Commission who could not hide thier shock and utter grief about the death of their CEO.

As announced , the final burial rites where Sir John would be laid to rest has been scheduled to take place on March 2021.

The demise of Mr Afriyie occurred on July 1 2020, after being on admission at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra.

He died at the age of 68.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (popularly known as Sir John, was a Ghanaian lawyer and politician.

The late Afriyie, was born in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He attended Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School in Bekwai from where he obtained his GCE Ordinary level certificate.

The affable but staunch NPP member, proceeded to obtain his GCE Advanced level certificate from Konongo Odumase Secondary School in Konongo.

Mr Afriyie was admitted to study political science at the University of Ghana. He then enrolled at the Ghana School of Law where he graduated with Bachelor of Laws. After this he was admitted as a solicitor and counsel for the Supreme Court of Ghana.

He entered the law practice in 1981. During the John Agyekum Kufour administration, he was appointed head of legal services at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation. He was later made to act as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the corporation.

While managing his firm, Afriyie was also actively engaged in Ghanaian politics. He served as the general secretary of the New Patriotic Party from 2010 to 2014.

In March 2017, President Nana Akuffo-Addo appointed Afriyie as CEO of the Forestry Commission.
