The U.S. Embassy in Accra has announced that it will temporarily suspend most routine consular services from July 20 to July 31, 2026, to carry out scheduled facility maintenance.
The embassy said normal operations are expected to resume on August 3, 2026. Officials have advised applicants to plan ahead and monitor official updates before visiting the consular section.
According to the embassy, most routine visa and passport services will be unavailable during the maintenance period. Routine appointments for these services will not take place while the work is underway.
Walk-in notarial services will also be suspended until normal operations resume. The embassy said Consular Reports of Death Abroad will not be processed during the temporary closure.
Despite the suspension, several services will remain available.
Applicants who have already received notification that their passport or Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) is ready may collect their documents. Collections will take place on Thursdays between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
The embassy also said adult passport renewal applications submitted through its drop box will continue to be processed.
The embassy said U.S. citizens who need emergency consular assistance can still contact the duty officer throughout the maintenance period. Emergency services will remain available despite the temporary suspension of routine operations.
Officials encouraged travellers and visa applicants to adjust their plans where necessary. The embassy also advised the public to check official announcements for updates on appointments and reopening arrangements.
Applicants with upcoming travel plans should make sure they understand how the temporary changes may affect their applications.
The embassy said the temporary suspension is necessary to complete scheduled maintenance work. Officials expect the upgrades to improve the delivery of consular services after operations resume.
The embassy thanked the public for its patience and cooperation during the maintenance period.
