A former Director of the Ghana Law School, Mr Kwaku Ansah-Asare has chided Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo for disrespecting President John Dramani Mahama demanding an immediate apology from her.
He stated that the press conference organized by Justice Torkornoo was unnecessary and could have been averted.
Ansa-Asare admitted the Chief Justice may have concerns about the committee’s work but running to the media to vent her frustration was not the right channel.
“She was driven by the frustration within and she should apologise to the nation”, he noted.
Sharing his views on TV3’s Key Points on July 28th, Mr. Asare indicated that the press conference disrespected the president hence her team must address it.
“The conference disrespected the president. No Judge is above the law, not even the president. That act of disrespect must be addressed by her team”.
“She administered the presidential oath and made him say after her that he will uphold the constitution. So what does he want the first Gentleman of the land to do? Mahama can’t do anything other than to adhere to the provisions of the Constitution.”
Mr. Ansah explained that when Article 146 is invoked, all actions and omissions must conform to the constitution; otherwise, they will constitute a constitutional violation.
“The Chief Justice should do a sober reflection and apologise because history is going to judge whether she was treated fairly or not”.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo organised a press conference on July 25th, during which she detailed the influence of political interests in her removal process.
In accordance with Article 146(10) of the Constitution, Justice Torkornoo has been suspended since April 22, 2025, after President John Dramani Mahama issued a preliminary determination in collaboration with the Council of State.
