The Majority Chief Whip of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and MP for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, expressed sympathy for Hawa Koomson regarding the assault she endured during the recent Ablekuma North rerun; nonetheless, he deemed her presence at the polling station unnecessary.
He indicated that Hawa Koomson’s composure and actions deescalated the whole situation and she should be blamed for the assault visited upon her.
“I sympathize with Hawa Koomson but her visiting the polling station to act in such a way caused the whole situation to escalate and she should be blamed for the assault on her personality”.
He observed that Hawa Koomson had a history of causing disturbances, and her presence prompted those nearby to restrain her to prevent any disruption at the polling location.
Defeamekpor conveyed his sincere apologies to the former Awutu Senya East MP, while adding that the regrettable occurrence could have been averted had Hawa Koomson refrained from visiting the polling center.
Build Up To The Ablekuma Rerun
He recounted how through his own initiative recommended to parliament for the Electoral Commission to appear before the House and answer to questions pertaining to electoral fraud being challenged at the High Court for the Ablekuma North 2024 parliamentary elections.
After a lengthy discussion with the EC boss, both the NPP and NDC came to an agreement for a rerun which was conducted on Friday July 11, 2025.
Afenyo-Markin False Publication
He used the opportunity to also correct a false publication by the Minority leader, Afenyo Markin, which implicated the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, as playing a part in visiting the mayhem that was occasioned on Hawa Koomson.
Defeamekpor explained that Gbande was even the one who came to her rescue and sent her to hospital to receive medical care.
