The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) intends to launch a new digital platform in 2026, enabling car owners to reserve their desired registration numbers online prior to finalizing the registration process.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has revealed its intended plan of issuing number plates in the names of individual car owners as part of efforts to ensure adherence to road safety regulations.

The Authority stated on Friday, October 3, that the number plates will be registered in the names of the individual owners, who are solely responsible for removing them during the transfer of vehicle ownership to a new person.

“When vehicles are transferred from the immediate owner, that owner owes a responsibility to himself to take off the number to allow the new owner to go through the process to secure an assigned number to be fixed on the vehicle,” portion of the statement read.

The statement emphasized that upon implementation of the initiative, vehicle owners must recognize their number plates as unique identifiers and assume responsibility for safeguarding them.
