President John Dramani Mahama will today, November 17, swear into office Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie As Ghana’s Chief Justice after the dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was selected by Mahama on April 22, 2025 as the Acting Chief Justice following Justice Torkonoo’s suspension and subsequent removal.

On September 23, 2025, he was appointed by the President to assume the role of Chief Justice, awaiting recommendations from the Appointments Committee and approval from Parliament.

The President nominated Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, recognizing his extensive experience and dedicated service on the Bench, including the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court.

While assuring the Appointments Committee of Parliament on November 10, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized his dedication to transparent, inclusive leadership while reaffirming his commitment to enhancing judicial independence and facilitating better access to justice.

 

On Thursday, November 13, Parliament confirmed him with a decisive 169-63 vote, paving the way for his swearing-in today.
