A leading member of the United Party (UP), Ebo Buckman, has criticized the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for allegedly raising expectations among Ghanaians while failing to deliver tangible results.
He stated that the NPP projected Bawumia as the ‘economic messiah’ who can help turn the fortunes of the country with Bawumia’s wife leading the charge.
“He was described as an economic genius by Ghanaians. That’s how even his wife described him. Ghanaians trusted him and gave him control of the economy,” Buckman said.
Speaking on TV3 May 22, he noted that Bawumia was held in high esteem as the savior of the economy due to his public lectures and Town Hall Meetings where he shares insights into Ghana’s economic crisis.
However, upon assuming power, the ‘economic genius’ began to provide justifications for the mismanagement of the economy.
Buckman said that the former Vice President acknowledged in one of his speeches that the commitments he made to improve the economy resonated with Ghanaians, contributing to the NPP’s significant victory in the 2016 elections.
He contended that the fundamental concern is not the NPP’s desire for power once again, but rather the accomplishments of the party during its eight-year tenure in administration.
“The question pertains to the NPP’s performance in economic governance, corruption, and illegal mining,” he said.
