Ewurabena Aubynn who contested on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the just ended Ablekuma North rerun has emerged victorious after beating her strongest opponent, Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Aubynn won by 50.21% while Afriyie had 49.79%. Following a protracted legal battle at the High Court over the December 7, 2024 elections, the Electoral Commission (EC) scheduled the rerun yesterday, July 11, 2025.
Aubynn secured a victory in a constituency which is widely known to be an NPP base for decades.
The leadership of the New Patriotic Party protested the rerun, asserting that their candidate had already secured victory and that the Electoral Commission should have confirmed Afriyie long ago, rendering the election unnecessary. However, Afriyie disregarded the party’s directive not to contest, claiming she had already won and that the second round merely served to affirm her prior victory.
However, the outcome of the results did not go in favor of the NPP candidate as she was beaten by merely a 1 percent gap. The rerun witnessed a series of violent assaults on both politicians and media people, including an incident where a police officer unjustifiably struck a GHOne reporter, igniting a nationwide discourse among civil society organizations, lawmakers, and media professionals.
