Minority leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has lauded the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for rebranding itself to become more attractive to students in various universities around the country today.
He observed that the NDC in time past became a party students detested and being identified as an NDC supporter on campus came with its own trauma because the student body loved the NPP and its ideology.
He added that the NDC has today turned the tide in their favour and has become popular among students across the country through perseverance, resilience and continuous efforts of the party to raise awareness and inclusively embrace all individuals.
Speaking at a forum, he acknowledged the party’s rebranding strategy as key in making it attractive, making it now a choice for many students.
“I think we need to understand how data reacts to our actions. There was a time when students at Cape Vas (University of Cape Coast) were not inclined to identify with the NDC”, he said.
He disclosed techniques employed to secure electoral victories on campus back then, noting that those identified as affiliated with the NDC were often met with opposition from the student body and were subsequently voted against.
Citing a similar situation that happened to his cousin, Afenyo-Markin said that his cousin contested for Casford Hall President on UCC campus and was massively voted against in the dying minutes of the contest after his rival spread rumors about him being affiliated to the NDC.
“I vividly recall that my cousin was vying for the position of Casford President. I served as his campaign manager. At the last moment, he was defeated, and after the election, we were informed about an NDC pickup in the Ogua area where he was observed chatting with someone in the car, which was used as propaganda against him.”
Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the NPP downplayed the goodwill and confidence the student populace on various university campuses had in the party which he believes has worked for the NDC.
Explainigm further, he highlighted NDC’s unwavering commitment to restoring the confidence of the student body through its rebranding initiative as a crucial factor in garnering extensive support.
“They went into rebranding their party. They have rebranded their party to make it appealing to students”.
