Former Environment Minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has raised a critical question: do supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) truly wish to permit arrogant individuals to take on leadership roles within the party?
In the piece ‘Let’s Save NPP,’ he characterized the party’s present leadership as unpatriotic and without the foresight to see the imminent turmoil threatening the party owing to their poor decision-making.
“Do we want an all-inclusive NPP or one that is controlled by people, including an arrogant “Prime Minister”, a declared fugitive, and their other “Nouveau Riche” family members and friends to continue to control the Party post January 2026? Niemals!,”portion of his statement read.
He criticized the party for failing to take any clue from the bizarre defeat it suffered in the 2024 December polls.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng described the electoral process that led to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s nomination as the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, fraudulent.
According to him, money exchanged hands and it paved the way for Dr. Bawumia to lead the party. He believes that this played a significant role in the party’s electoral defeat cautioning that the same predicament is about to befall the party.
“Those who conceptualised and are rolling out the top-down election process will stop at nothing to rig the elections for Dr Bawumia,” he said.
He pointed out that the Chairman of the Council of Elders’ approach, which has involved attempts to sidestep constructive advice from notable NPP figures such as Kwame Pianim, Kwadwo Mpiani, and Dr. Agyei Bawuah, could impede the party’s progress.
Prof Frimpong-Boateng expressed concern regarding the actions of former President Akufo-Addo and his associates, who appear to be attempting to exert their influence over the party’s decisions through the Chairman, thereby establishing a potentially biased system.
“Allowing the January 2026 flag-bearer election to be managed by an incompetent National Executive, and supervised by a toothless NEC remotely controlled by a past President and his family members, removes any level playing field,” he said.
He further alleged that the former Akufo-Addo administration relied on bribery and intimidation as key strategies to bolster the party’s image. He emphasized the legacy of the previous government as one marked by poor economic management and a failure to tackle corruption, resulting in considerable damage to our forests and water bodies.
The former Akufo-Addo appointee urged party faithfuls to reject any diversionary tactics and ensure fairness in the forthcoming elections.
“If Dr Bawumia cannot read between the lines because of power, fame, and wealth, then I want him to think carefully about his future and reputation,” he said.
