There has been an increase in the budgetary allocation for Book and Research Allowance which previously stood at a staggering Ghc480 million but has now risen to Ghc610 million, according to Ghana’s Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu.

The announcement comes at the backdrop of recent threatening messages from the tertiary education unions which includes; University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) regarding the government’s delay in disbursing their allowances.

During the 22nd UTAG Biennial Conference on September 30, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu emphasized government’s commitment to enhancing the respectability of the teaching profession, highlighting the ongoing collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance to ensure timely disbursement of funds.

The anticipated increase is likely to put matters between the government and tertiary education unions to rest. The unions’ concerns regarding timely and adequate funding for research underscore its critical role in improving the quality of teaching and learning in Ghana’s universities, technical institutions, and colleges of education.
