Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has expressed his disappointment with President Mahama’s approach to fighting illegal mining, also referred to as galamsey, in the country.
According to him, President John Mahama took minimal action on illegal mining during his first term in office, and the president’s demeanor currently does not indicate a serious commitment to combating the issue.
“On galamsey, however, he has been very disappointing. The decay did not start in the last 8 years of Akufo-Addo, as the president said. I was a journalist when President Mahama was president. In his first term, I did not see the seriousness in fighting the menace. And his body language doesn’t seem to show that it will be any different”, he wrote on his Facebook page.
In a Facebook post, he also questioned the motive of disengaging the IGP’s taskforce and emphasized the important role they could play in the ongoing fight against galamsey.
He subsequently commended President Mahama for demonstrating he is on top of issues in all the sectors however, he believes the president lacks the goodwill to fight illegal mining.
“Mr. President, so far, you have done well. Ghanaians are beginning to hope again in many sectors, but in the fight against galamsey, I feel more hopeless after listening to you tonight.”
