Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emphatically denied accusations of having played a role in the 2024 electoral defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the 2024 Presidential candidate of the NPP, post-election report Mike Oquaye and Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu clearly did not fault him for their electoral loss.
While speaking during his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region on Thursday September 11, Dr. Bawumia refuted allegations of his Muslim faith and his candidature contributing to NPP’s defeat indicating that such claims are unsubstantiated.
“Clearly, our [NPP] loss in the polls had nothing to do with presidential candidate Dr. Bawumia. Dr. Bawumia was not to be blamed. This is unrelated to my identity as a Muslim or a Northerner; the proof is plain.”
He observed that as soon as he conceded defeat and reached out to congratulate his opponent, certain party members, whom he labeled as naysayers, attributed the loss to him and his religion.
“After conceding on Sunday, I began to hear rumors on Monday. First, they said that because Dr. Bawumia is a Muslim, Christians did not vote for him. I don’t think that’s true ”.
He maintained that his success in the NPP primaries proves such claims are unfounded and should be disregarded.
‘During the primaries which had 10 candidates contesting for the flagbearer position. I was the only Muslim. If the NPP doesn’t like Muslims, like I won’t win. There were 9 other choices but I got 61% to lead the party and for that matter I know NPP doesn’t discriminate”, he said.
