Jamal Roberts thrilled fans at the grand finale of the American Idol, delivering an unparalleled performance as he became the first African male to win the coveted award in two decades since a Black person last won it.

The 27-year-old physical education tutor from Meridian, Mississippi could not hold back his tears as Ryan Seacrest called his name indicating he had been crowned the winner of the competition.

Ruben Studdard won the award in 2003. Jamal broke a 22-year wait when he became the first Black male to be honored as the winner of the 2025 American Idol.

“This moment is not just for me,” Jamal said, visibly emotional. “It’s for every little Black boy who grew up thinking his dreams were too far out of reach.”

Despite the challenges he faced as a father of three and a physical education instructor, Jamal gave it his all. His desire to sing in a prestigious competition was not hindered by his obligations.

Throughout the night, he practiced in hotel rooms, refining his vocal skills and ensuring he made a favorable impression on the judges.

But it was at the finale of the American Idol that his rendition of Anthony Hamilton’s “Her Heart” solidified his name. Judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan were speechless, while guest judge Carrie Underwood observed that it was a memorable moment of the night.

In addition to the $125,000 cash prize he will receive as the 2025 American Idol winner, Jamal Roberts will also receive a $100,000 reward after recording his debut album with Hollywood Records.
