Senior communicator for the Movement of Change, Ebo Buckman, has lashed out at New Patriotic Party (NPP) members calling for the immediate release of Chairman Wontumi who is under investigation for multiple criminal offences which include money laundering, fraud and causing financial loss to the State.

“So there is no sensible person in NPP who could have advised Chairman Wontumi when he was misbehaving”, he said.

Speaking on Tv3’s newday, Buckman observed that NPP members are not behaving in a mature manner stressing that the same members protesting for Wontumi’s release could have channeled that effort in advising the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman when the party was in power.

Background

Chairman Wontumi earlier reported himself to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday May 26 after operatives from the National Security raided his residence on Friday May 23.

He was questioned, cautioned and later given bail and instructed to report the following day. After honoring the invitation and responding to the queries, he was discharged and asked to go.

However, EOCO officials whisked Wontumi away to their office in Accra for questioning on related issues of his involvement in illegal mining and other criminal charges.

The arrest was met with strong resistance by NPP party leaders and supporters who stormed EOCO premises chanting and asking for the immediate release of the NPP stalwart. The unpleasant scenes called for the immediate deployment of military personnel to restore order.

The NPP has described the recent arrests of its party members by the NDC government as politically motivated, intended to implicate former Akufo-Addo’s appointees of corruption, a tag that remains unsubstantiated
