The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fodjour, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s potential defeat in the 2024 elections to former president Akufo-Addo’s failure to pass the Anti-LGBTQ Bill into law due to pressures beyond his ability.

The Anti-LGBTQ Bill requiring presidential assent was left unaddressed by former president Akufo-Addo, who observed that it was missing certain essential elements that would have rendered it complete. The proposed bill intended to criminalize lesbianism and gayism did not receive the necessary backing for various reasons.

Ntim Fodjour, together with nine other Members of Parliament from both the majority and minority factions, have reintroduced the bill for consideration by the 9th Parliament.

“Had Akufo-Addo signed this bill, it would have greatly improved the reputation of my party. I would assert that the result of the 2024 election might have been different,” he stated.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill proposes strict limitations on LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, encompassing custodial penalties for same-sex relationships, public displays of affection, and the dissemination of LGBTQ+ content.

Also,  it sought to prevent the establishment of a transgender healthcare, disband LGBTQ+ organizations, and impose legal penalties on any support or sponsorship for these groups.
