
President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s Chief Justice following the removal of Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo from office on grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1).
A statement from the Presidency dated September 23 noted that the appointment is in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution revealing Justice Baffoe-Bonie’s name has been submitted to the Council of State for confirmation and approval.
The statement which was signed by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, described Baffoe-Bonnie as a highly respected council with great experience.
He is regarded as an expert in constitutional law, taxation, penal administration, election law, and legal education within the ranks of the judiciary. He has played a critical role in the implementation of judicial reforms and remains a proponent of professional development and ethical practice.
Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2008, he held positions as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, a High Court Judge, and a Circuit Court Judge. Before embarking on his judicial career, he served as the Principal Inspector of Taxes and held the position of Head of Legal for the Eastern and Volta Regions at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
