Former MP for Assin Hon. Kennedy Agyapong has opined that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has zero tolerance for candidates who perform poorly implying that, Dr. Bawumia is unfit to lead the party for a second time followimg his abysmal performance in the 2024 elections.
Speaking to Party faithfuls during a visit to mourn the late Asante Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu, the NPP stalwart noted that the tradition of the NPP is anchored in rewarding hardwork.
“We did not extend our support for Adu Boahen, and we ought not to do so now. Even President Kufuor had to demonstrate his capabilities in 1996 before he got another opportunity in 2000. Similarly, Nana Addo proved his competence twice before being given the greenlight to contest for the thrid time which saw jim win thd elections”, Agyapong said at a gathering of party supporters.
His remarks coincide with the party’s search for a better candidate and the recent performance of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was chosen as the party’s flagbearer during the 2024 elections, in which the party suffered a crushing defeat to the NDC in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Dr Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate lost woefully to president John Dramani Mahama. Bawumia polled
( 4,877,611 votes) which represents 41.75% while Mr Mahama had (6,591,790 votes) representing 56.42%, according to Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
Mr Agyapong who contested Dr. Bawumia during the party’s presidential primaries in the run up to the elections has advised party followers to engage in profound contemplation and refrain from acting impulsively.
