Calm has been restored in Ntotroso following an attempt by some individuals who forcefully wanted to steal gold at the Newmont mining facility last night, January 8, 2025.

The police confronted the group agitating to steal the gold leading to the death of three persons while four others got injured in the process.

During the scuffle, the police officers had to physically engage with the suspects to bring the situation under control.

According to a statement signed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, had to step in by collaborating with the Regional Police team throughout the night.

The team had engagement with community leaders and the youth of the town to ease tensions. The efforts of the police have calm nerves and there has not been any reprisal attacks or escalation of the situation in the community.

“The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, worked on the phone with the Regional Police team to engage community leaders and the youth throughout the night till this morning to stabilize the situation, and there has been no reprisal attacks or escalation of the situation in the community,” the statement read.

To ascertain the actual cause of the incident, the police have deployed a special team from Accra to Ntotroso. A reinforcement team has also been dispatched to the community to maintain law and order.

The three deceased persons are Muslims, according to the statement from the police.

“The police have received information that the three deceased victims are Muslims, and the due process of the law is being followed for the bodies to be released to their families for burial later today.”

In view of this, the police have urged the general public to remain calm and have trust in the service as it continues to work to ensure law and order prevail.
