Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has reportedly been taken to a hospital on May 27, following his detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.
Andy Appiah Kubi, the lawyer for Chairman Wontumi confirmed this latest update.
The former Member of Parliament for Asante-Akyim North, refused to disclose the health facility Chairman Wontumi has been sent.
Andy Appiah-Kubi noted that he is aware of the hospital his client has been sent to and is reliably informed Wontumi is responding to treatment.
Responding to the ongoing legal battle his client is facing, Appiah-Kubi indicated that Wontumi has not been fully interrogated but he (Wontumi) will avail himself on Wednesday May 28 for the proceedings to continue if doctors declares him fit.
Further, Appiah-Kubi reacted to a recent writ of summons filed by Exim Bank against Chairman Wontumi. He explained that they have been served with the writ of summons and they are going to respond to it accordingly.
Chairman Wontumi earlier reported himself to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday May 26 after operatives from the National Security raided his residence on Friday May 23.
He was questioned, cautioned and later given bail and instructed to report the following day. After honoring the invitation and responding to the queries, he was discharged and asked to go.
However, EOCO officials whisked Wontumi away to their office in Accra for questioning on related issues of his involvement in illegal mining and other criminal charges.
The arrest was met with strong resistance by NPP party leaders and supporters who stormed EOCO premises chanting and asking for the immediate release of the NPP stalwart. The unpleasant scenes called for the immediate deployment of military personnel to restore order.
The NPP has described the recent arrests of its party members by the NDC government as politically motivated, intended to implicate former Akufo-Addo’s appointees of corruption, a tag that remains unsubstantiated.
Chairman Wontumi has been accused of his involvement in dubious transactions during the previous administration, which has incurred substantial financial losses for the state, leading to subsequent confrontations with state security services.
