
The Office of the Presidency has addressed a petition from acclaimed investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, confirming that the 19-year contract between the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and the waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited has come to an end, with no intentions for renewal.
This brings to the end of a long standing agreement between the government and waste management company which has attracted years of public criticism from Ghanaians over value for money, transparency and accountability.
The statement signed by the Secretary to the Presidency, Dr. Callistus Mahama, emphasized that all payments made to the company after the contracts’ expiration will be accounted for, no payments will be made to the company without proper verification and any unauthorized payment will be retrieved.
The statement also noted cabinet has instructed that future contracts should undergo competitive regional or distric-base tendering to ensure value for for money and provide platform for competitive bidding.
Following the aforementioned steps the Mahama led administration is putting in place which will help save money, the Presidency plans of increasing the wages of sweepers to “a more liveable income.” Also, fumigation contracts that has not been done to meet the right standards will be reviewed and discontinued accordingly upon advice from the Attorney-General.
