Agyekum Banahene, a journalist for GHOne TV, described a terrifying encounter at the just concluded Ablekuma North rerun that made him feel intimidated.

The supposed incident took place today Friday July 11 at the Church of Pentecost, North Odorkor Polling 2 Station.

Banahene stated in an interview with Fauzu Masawudu of Citi TV that he was assaulted by an officer when he attempted to access the inner area of the voting center, despite his mandate to provide a live report on the polls.

“I feel intimidated because we expressed concerns regarding media freedom, and now an officer, rather than an ordinary individual, has assaulted a journalist.”

He stated that the officer who assaulted him targeted him and executed his predetermined plan despite the presence of numerous media persons at the centre.

“He approached me and instructed me to vacate the premises; however, other media personnel were present, and he did not request anyone else to leave.”

He noted they he resisted the attempt by the officer to leave rhe premises and was assaulted in the process.

“I told him I can’t leave because I’m assigned to cover the event that particular polling station and it would be suicidal if I leave and something comes up. How will report on it? But he was pushing me and in the heat pf the argument, slapped me.”

Banahene pointed out that the behavior of the officer’s raises concerns about police brutality in the country and press freedom which has become a national debate for decades.

“This indicates that he is interested in whatever we are doing. Right now, my eyes are trembling. I have no idea what the future holds for me.”

Meanwhile, Banahene has revealed his next line of action is to make an official complaint at the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday. He confirmed that the Accra Mayor has contacted him concerning the matter.
