Former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has embarked on a legal endeavor to prevent the vetting and subsequent approval of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as the next leader of Ghana’s Judiciary.

The legal challenge presented to the High Court seeks to halt all proceedings executed by the Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang Committee, set up to investigate the petitions that led to her dismissal.

Justice Torkornoo, in her application, seeks a judicial declaration deeming the committee’s proceedings null and void and requests the annulment of the Presidential Warrant that led to her being fired.

Torkornoo’s legal suit came to light as the Parliamentary Appointments Committee prepared itself to assess Justice Baffoe-Bonnie for his new role as Ghana’s Chief Justice.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was on Monday September 1,2025 dismissed from office by President Mahama based on the advice of a committee formed under Article 146(6).

The committee, after engaging with the Council of State, concluded that she was culpable of misconduct, including the misappropriation of public funds and breaches of constitutional mandates.

As of April 22, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was appointed as an Acting Chief Justice following the suspension of Justice Torkornoo. On 21st September, 2025, he was formally nominated by the President to assume the role in a significant capacity.
