Ken Ofori-Atta, former finance minister of Ghana has been arrested and detained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The former appointee of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo’s administration was taken into custody for his long stay in the country.

His lawyers have revealed that their client’s detention is not tied to any wrongdoing or criminal charges as some people perceive.

A statement from his Ghana-based law firm Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline and Partners (MPOBB) emphasized that ICE took Ken Ofori-Atta into custody for questioning due to his visa status.

According to reports, Ken Ofori-Atta has filed a petition for a change of status, which is a legal procedure under U.S. immigration law that permits a person to stay longer than the duration of their initial visa while authorities scrutinize their application.

The statement further confirmed that Mr Ofori-Atta’s legal team are in contact with ICE to resolve the matter amicably.

Also, Mr. Ofori-Atta is fully cooperating with the US authorities as a law abiding citizen as the case is being resolved through legal means.
