Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovations, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has stated that he is not and has never been a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The leading figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) noted that many people have associated his political career with a sense of political loyalty to the NDC.
He clarified that while he has numerous friends in the NDC, this does not imply membership. He emphasized that his professional interactions with individuals from various political parties do not equate to being a member of that party.
The former minister observed that when he arrived in the country to pursue his career as a heart surgeon, the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) was in power, and his professional responsibilities necessitated collaboration with individuals from various political and cultural backgrounds.
He characterized political alignment as a reflection of deep-seated beliefs rather than a strategic choice. He acknowledged that aligning with the opposing side would have been a simpler choice.“However, I did not.”
While speaking in an interview on Metro TV, he distinctly explained the boundaries between camaraderie and ideological beliefs. “Familiarity with individuals does not inherently grant you membership among them,” he articulated. “Exhibiting friendliness doesn’t equate to sharing the same political beliefs.”
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng went on to say that the political climate in Ghana puts people in difficult situations when they have similar opinions to those of opposing parties since it is widely believed that you should only support your political party.
