The Ghana Institution of Engineers says the city has lost much of its natural water retention areas, so stormwater now runs off too quickly and overwhelms drains.

The group argues that the problem is not only about rainfall, but also about poor land-use decisions, blocked waterways, and weakened drainage capacity . Engineers have also proposed practical fixes such as rainwater storage systems and stronger upstream water management to reduce future flooding.

The latest warning comes after deadly floods in Accra, with reports saying three people died in the most recent heavy downpour.

NADMO has also urged residents to pay attention to weather alerts as the city faces repeated flooding and related disasters.
